Structure

N の ＋ 最中に／V-ている ＋ 最中に／N の ＋ 最中だ

Right in the middle of something happening, something unexpected cuts in, usually an inconvenience (会議中に電話が鳴った). The latter clause is a sudden event; not used when the secondary event does not interrupt. Differs from 〜ところ (just when) and 〜中.
