to happen to see; to spot

To see someone/something by chance, unintentionally. Often seen in the form 最近よく見かける (see often lately). Distinguish 見過ごす (overlook), 見違える (mistake / not recognize).

Examples

さっき駅前で佐藤さんを見かけたんですが、今は海外にいるはずです。I happened to see Mr. Sato in front of the station earlier, but he should be abroad now.
