instead of; in place of; in return
Two meanings: (1) doing in place of, using this instead of that (ビールのかわりにジュース); (2) in exchange, to make up for (働いたかわりに休む). Not to be confused with 〜に代わって (acting in another person's role), which is used with nouns referring to people.
